Cushy v. Uncomfortable

A country's assets reside in the tinkerers, the hobbyists, and the risk-takers.
~ Nassim Nicholas Taleb

A cushy corporate job is just that. Until it’s not. The fact is most corporate jobs are cushy while they last (even if it does not feel all that cushy). But the cushy corporate jobs are becoming increasingly unstable. They may be outsourced at any moment. It has gotten to the point that we recommend creating a “Plan B” to almost all of our private clients.

The thing is, Plan B is uncomfortable. Plan B is hard. It is always easier to find a hundred other things to do including cleaning out the garage.

The cool thing about a Plan B, especially while you are still in the cushy job, is you can work on it gradually. You can play with many ideas. You can dream about what you “would do” if money were not a concern. You can talk to others. You have the luxury of exploring many possibilities.

Now, if you are in the top 5% on the self-discipline scale, you can pull off a Plan B totally on your own. Otherwise, it may be advisable to hire a good coach who you resonate with. They will guide you through the process.

Start the uncomfortable work early, before you get “the pink slip.”

What is your Plan B? Does your organization show signs of wear and tear?
